About Remote Canyons

In this amazing tour we offer you to visit underground cities, such as Kaymakli, passing through typical towns and villages of the region, including the traditional town of Güzelyurt, which you will briefly tour, continuing then up to the steep canyon of Ilhara Valley, the village of Belisirma and the ancient monastery of  Selime.

Kaymakli: one of the largest and incredible underground cities, with eight underground levels, of which 4 are open to the public. There we can appreciate what used to be old stables, cellars, passages and even underground churches.

Güzelyurt (Gelveri): this is a genuine Turkish town and hometown of St. Gregory Nazianzen. In this area, belonging to the city of Aksaray, used to live a large Greek community until the population exchange that took place in the 20s, then replaced by the Turks of Thessaloniki and Kavala.

Ilhara Valley: This canyon is deep and lush, divided by Melendiz river, on whose banks are emplaced ancient churches carved into the rock. Here we will enjoy a very pleasant 4 kilometers hike across the canyon to reach Belisirma, a typical and not too much visited village of the Cappadocia region. On the way back to your hotel we will also visit the fascinating monastery of Selime, from XIII century, with beautiful churches carved into the rock.
