Ceramics, wine making and carpet weaving have been the most popular crafts in Cappadocia since antiquity. For thousands of years Avanos has been a pottery center. The ceramics industry in this region and the several pottery shops date back to the Hittites. Some methods and patterns used today by potters date back to that time, and the red silt of the Kızılırmak was also used for pottery. You will watch potters in Avanos spin their wheels with their feet, producing incredible pieces of art and even attempt to build a pot for yourself.

Archaeological evidence indicates that winemaking in this region is more than 7000 years old, but between 1800 BC and 1400 BC, Hittites played a major role in the production of wineries, formation and exporting of wine to Assyrian and Sumerian lands. Early Christians subsequently developed methods of cultivation on the viticulture and wineries were found here in all monastic complexes.

The carpet is a gift to world civilization from the Turkish people. The knotted rug, which was found early in Central Asia where the Turks used to live, is an art form that the Turks discovered, developed and presented to the world. The Turks created this carpet with plentiful lamb wool to shield themselves from the cold of Central Asian plains, where they lived. This art form was taken by Turks and distributed wherever they went. Anatolian carpets and kilims have a common prestige for their bright colors , designs and outstanding design. Natural dyes are used, so that Cappadocia is the best place to purchase good quality carpets.

Visit to a traditional pottery workshop in Avanos, a local producer that makes handmade carpets or wine tasting at the local Kocabağ Winery in Uçhisar can be done by any private tour without extra charge.
